Beat the Heat: Essential First Aid for Hyperthermia

5/8/2021

Summer is around the corner, and there's more than enough potential for you ror someone you know to suffer from a heat-related emergency. Hyperthermia is a condition caused by overheating of the body, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. It occurs when the body absorbs more heat than it can dissipate, causing the body temperature to rise to dangerous levels. Hyperthermia can occur due to intense physical activity in hot weather, exposure to high temperatures, and other health conditions. Here are some signs to look out for in recognizing hyperthermia and how to provide first aid for it
Signs of Hyperthermia:
  • Excessive sweating or lack of sweating
  • Flushed or red skin
  • Rapid or shallow breathing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness

First Aid for Hyperthermia
  1. Move the affected person to a cooler environment, such as an air-conditioned area or a shaded spot.
  2. Remove any excess clothing and place cool, wet towels on their skin to help lower their body temperature.
  3. Provide the person with cool beverages, such as water or sports drinks, to rehydrate their body and replenish any electrolytes lost.
  4. If the person is experiencing severe hyperthermia, such as loss of consciousness or a worsening in their condition, call emergency services immediately. A hospital visit may be necessary to provide further treatment.

Prevention of Hyperthermia
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, before and during outdoor activities.
  • Avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing that allows your body to breathe.
  • Take frequent breaks to rest and cool down in shady or air-conditioned areas.
  • Be aware of your body and the signs of heat exhaustion or hyperthermia.

Recognizing the signs of hyperthermia is crucial for providing prompt and effective first aid. Providing the right treatment can help prevent serious complications and even save a life. It is essential to take appropriate measures to prevent hyperthermia, especially during hot weather conditions or intense physical activity. Always be cautious and attentive to the signs and symptoms of hyperthermia, to ensure a safe and healthy experience. Shield First Aid offers top-notch training and certification programs, empowering individuals and businesses to be prepared and capable of providing life-saving assistance during hyperthermic emergencies.
