Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that demands immediate attention. In Canada, approximately 2.5 million individuals are affected by food allergies, and anaphylaxis accounts for a significant portion of these cases. Understanding common allergens, recognizing the signs and symptoms, and knowing the correct steps for first aid response can be crucial in saving lives. As we enter allergy season here in Ontario, let's review on how to recognize and respond to cases of anaphylaxis.
Understanding Common Allergens:
Common allergens triggering anaphylactic reactions vary, but some prevalent ones include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, eggs, milk, soy, wheat, insect stings, latex, and certain medications. It's essential to recognize that allergens may differ from person to person, and even trace amounts can trigger a severe reaction.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms:
Anaphylactic shock can manifest rapidly and progress swiftly. Common signs and symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, hives or skin rash, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, and a feeling of impending doom. It's crucial to act promptly when these symptoms arise.

Necessary First Aid Steps for Anaphylaxis:
  1. Call emergency services immediately.
  2. Remove the person from the source of the allergic reaction.
  3. If the person has an automatic epinephrine auto-injector (such as an EpiPen or AllerJect), help them use it. Note the time that the auto-injector was used.
  4. Loosen tight clothing and cover them with a blanket to keep them warm.
  5. Monitor their breathing, and be prepared to perform CPR if the person becomes unconscious with inadequate breathing.
  6. Reassure and comfort the person while waiting for medical assistance.

Anaphylactic shock is a serious medical emergency that requires swift action. By familiarizing yourself with common allergens, recognizing the signs and symptoms, and knowing the necessary steps for first aid response, you can play a vital role in potentially saving a life.
